Why Would I Pay Someone Else to Write My Résumé?

Updated: Mar 9

Let’s say you want to go on vacation to France. The easiest way to get there from the United States would, of course, be to fly. But in order to fly to France, you will need a passport. To get an official passport, you must apply for one with the Department of State, pay a fee, and wait for weeks or months until it is shipped to you.

This sounds like a tedious process, right? Here’s an alternative: make the passport yourself using construction paper and your home printer.

Sure, they might laugh at you in customs if you try to use a homemade passport. So flying likely won’t be an option. But you could go to a local freight port and bribe your way into a shipping container. Eventually, after several days of seasickness and without food or water, you would arrive in France, only to be immediately arrested for illegal immigration.

After a night in a French jail, you would be granted one phone call, which you would use to ask a family member for bail money. They would agree to help by wiring the money to French authorities. You would then be deported back to the United States without ever laying eyes on the Eiffel Tower. Furthermore, you would be criminally charged and banned from future international travel.

Of course, it would have been much easier and less expensive just to get an official passport! The Department of State has the authority and experience to ensure that your travel goes as smoothly as possible, provided that you go through the necessary processes.

While this metaphor may be a stretch, it illustrates a powerful point. And, yes, the same principle can be applied to résumé writing.

There is no one who knows more about your career than you do. You’ve been there for every meeting, every email, and every water cooler conversation. So it seems fitting that you should be the one to write your résumé. After all, you’re the subject matter expert.

But ask yourself honestly: how many résumés have you written? How many have you reviewed and compared? Is it possible that you might overlook a detail or two?

For example: did you know that simply describing your job duties does not effectively describe you as a candidate? A hiring manager doesn’t just want to know what you did in your last job, they also want to know the impact it had on the organization.

There are many other factors that a certified professional résumé writer will look for when reviewing a résumé. Here are some:

  • ATS optimization: is the résumé full of relevant keywords that will help you in automated searches? Are the keywords in the right place?

  • Document length: does the résumé concisely describe your skills and abilities?

  • Font/spacing: is the résumé written in a readable font, with ample white space and easily differentiated sections?

  • Formatting: are the sections of the résumé logically organized? Do they fit your background?

  • Grammar: is your résumé written in the proper tenses? Are you certain there are no typo’s?

  • Tone: are you portraying yourself as a doer, or as an achiever?

Here’s the bottom line: yes, you can write your résumé yourself, and you will save money. But that savings may cost you time, frustration, and believe it or not, it could also cost you money.
