Working From Home - Worth It?

Updated: Mar 9

When beginning a job search, it’s crucial to have a plan. Otherwise, you can turn into a ship without a sail, and the whole process can be overwhelming. There are lots of factors to consider when mapping your job search, but today, let’s talk about one in particular.

Should you look for WFH positions? This depends on many factors including your job type, your market, your home, and most importantly, yourself. Let’s break it down:

  1. Job Type - Does your job require a physical component, or are you mostly sitting at a computer all day? If you are frequently required to have meetings, are you comfortable communicating over a video chat platform?

  2. Market - The hiring market can be inconsistent, and downright tough at times. It’s even tougher if you live in an area without many employers in your line of work. It’s important to be honest with yourself about what’s available. If an employer has two equal candidates to choose from, and one of them is demanding to work from home, they’ll likely pick the other one.

  3. Your Home - What’s your home office space like? Is it sectioned off from the rest of your living space? Do you frequently hear horns or sirens outside your window? Do you have pets, children, or roommates? If so, can they access your workspace? Is there a solid-colored wall behind you for video conferences? Do you have a printer, pens, note paper, coffee maker, etc.? Can you leave and take a walk for a few minutes when you need to? Think of everything you’ve disliked about other workplaces, and make sure your home office has none of those qualities.

  4. Yourself - It’s time for some deep digging. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Are you easily distracted? Do you have a daily routine? How organized are you? Working from home provides great flexibility and saves you from a commute, but if you can’t use that added time effectively, you should consider sticking to a traditional job setting.
